  • Last Visual Dictionary entries: Draw pictures to represent Run-ons, Subject-Verb Agreement, Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS)
  • Readers' Workshop Projects are in the gradebook now!
    • ​I'm still missing projects/parts of projects
    • Double-check Skyward to make sure I got your project & the reflection, especially if you didn't get your project or rubric back today!

  • Writer's Workshop Reflection
    • Answer each question honestly and in complete sentences.

  • share my writing with my peers
  • and provide positive feedback to others

Homework:
  • Study for the Grammar Quiz on Wednesday
    Use the study guide (key here) & notes in your grammar packet! In-class review on Monday.
  • Late work due no later than Wednesday. Work submitted after Wednesday will not be graded.

Agenda:
  • "Writing means sharing. It's part of the human condition to want to share things -- thoughts, opinions, ideas." --Paulo Coelho
  • Theme
    • Write your strongest theme on the back of your story. 
    • It's OK if it's a different one than you came up with on Wednesday!
  • Reflect
    • Highlight/put a star next to the paragraph that you are most proud of
  • Musical Chairs Gallery Walk
    • You will be reading one another's stories.
      • Walk around the room until the music stops
      • Find the nearest story and read it!
    • Read without talking until it is time to switch
    • As you read, look for strengths in the writing. What do you enjoy about the story?
      • Write the things you like on a sticky note & leave it next to the story.
  • Read your notes
    • Take a moment to read the notes people left next to your story
    • Be Proud!
  • Turn it in!
    • Turn in your story along with your rubric.
    • They do not need to be stapled, but put your name on both!

    (If you don't have access to a printer at home, go to the library before class to print your story!)

  • Formatting
    • Rubric to earn a "4" for formatting: The story is at least 3 pages long and no longer than 7 pages, double-spaced. Font is 12pt and easy to read. (ex. Times New Roman)​

  • Editing: Remember that revising changes the content or ideas in your writing and editing changes the appearance of your writing
  • Grammar Editing Checklist
    • Read and reread your story for each focus of the checklist, fixing grammatical mistakes as you go.
    • After checking for mistakes, check off the boxes!
  • Work Options:
    • Editing - Edit for spelling, capitalization errors
    • Revising - Continue revising or changing ideas

Homework: 
  • Final draft typed and printed due Friday (if you don't have a printer at home, print your story from the library before you come in to class!)
  • Study for the grammar quiz on 11/27 - one week from today!

    • Grammar Study Guide (will not be collected, but will help you on the quiz!)
  • Missing/make-up work must be turned in no later than 11/27 to get graded before the trimester ends. I will not accept work after 11/27.

Agenda: 
  • Visual Dictionary: Draw pictures to represent peer review, clause, and fragment
  • Day Twelve - Finding the Motifs & Themes
    • Motifs are big ideas that appear throughout a text
      • What ideas appear throughout your story?
      • Examples: friendship, fear, embarrassment, joy, family
    • Choose 1-2 motifs from your list that you think are the most important. Write these in the boxes.
    • Turn these motifs into themes
      • ​A theme is a message that the author is trying to convey
      • What are you trying to say about your motifs?
      • Circle your strongest theme statement.
  • Revision
    • Use the feedback you were given by your peers to continue revising and improving your story.
    • Your final story will need to be typed and printed
    • Remember to plug in laptops when you're done!

  • Visual Dictionary: Draw pictures to represent revison, peer review, editing, and drafting/drafts
  • Peer Review​
    • Pass your draft to the person sitting clockwise from you
    • Read through your classmate’s draft
    • Write down strengths on one side of the table and ways to make the writing stronger on the right
  • Peer Review: What to look for​
    • What do you like about the story?
    • What do you wish there was more of?
    • Moments that would benefit from more IADDs
    • What moments are confusing?
  • Rotate & Repeat
    • ​Write your feedback in the table if it fits, or on the back of the page
  • Revise
    • ​Read through the feedback you were given
    • Start making changes!
    • Remember, revision is changing the content of your writing, or the ideas

    • Revision:
      • Changes the content of your writing
    • Reasons to revise:
      • To add description
      • To delete unimportant or confusing details
      • To change the flow/order of the story
    • Editing:
      • Changes the appearance of your writing
    • Reasons to edit:
      • To fix a grammar mistake
      • To capitalize the first letter of the sentence
      • To correct spelling
    • How are revision and editing similar? How are they different? Discuss with your table group, and fill in the venn diagram.
  • Writing
    • Independent Writing Time - Stay quiet so others can focus
    • Completed Draft Due Tomorrow - Can be typed and printed or handwritten
